Home Owner's Association Suing to Have Marine's Banner Removed

Home Owners Associations, or HOAs, were established for legitimate reasons. In neighborhoods and communities where homes have been abandoned or foreclosed, HOAs can step in and maintain yards to keep the neighborhood looking well-kept. Some of these communities also have pools and club houses that are paid by HOA dues. But what happens when an association begins making unreasonable demands? All it takes is one power-hungry board member and things can easily spin out of control.
Take the case of one New Orleans, Louisiana family. Timothy and Jodi Burr are being sued by their HOA for hanging a sign which supports their son, Marine Lance Corporal, Corey Burr, who’s been serving his country in Afghanistan. They first received notice from the HOA in February and immediately requested a meeting. No response to their request was made. At the same time they requested that the HOA rules be revised to allow them to keep the sign up for the 14 months their son would be in Afghanistan. Still no response. Then on July 15th they were served with a lawsuit. The lawyer representing the HOA has refused to comment.
It’s interesting to note that pictures in this particular neighborhood show sports team banners prominently displayed in front yards. Apparently supporting a Marine, fighting for our freedom is prohibited by the board members of this particular HOA.
There’s a Facebook page that’s been created in support of the Burr family and everyone is encouraged to follow. The HOA information is a matter of public record. After a quick search for Louisiana corporations, I easily found the information for this specific HOA. Even though the information is a matter of public record, but since we live in such a highly litigious society, and after much consideration, I’ve decided not to print the information in this article. Anyone wishing to have this information is more than encouraged to contact me whereupon I most gladly provide it.

Loves - that is crazy. It sounds like an irrational board member or neighbor raising tempers. They should be ashamed and embarrassed! How childish to want to deprive a family of this and to allow softball banners? And another great lesson for the kids folks. Great hub:) Tell your son Thank You!

I would enjoy having access to this HOA's charter. I am a proud Marine who gave three more proud Marines to the wars against terror, and this HOA incivility has to cease.
You can message me with the link. and thank you very much for making others across the country (and the globe) aware of this.
